“I wish they would cut those trees back, the way they are hanging over the street, they scare me”. I am not sure how the lady got onto that subject, but when I heard those words come out of her mouth, it registered immediately. She was talking about one of my favorite streets on Cape Cod, or even the country. What is wrong with these people? They come down here – Dedham in her case, or up here (from CT or New York), and immediately find something wrong or out of place with the way things are. They retire, or look for greener pastures. As soon as they do they get scared of the little wildness that remains. Their reaction is to cut it back, contain it, straighten it out, build something on it. Make it familiar, make it comfortable, make it like Dedham. Am I the only one feeling disgusted?
