Barren strawberry is native to the eastern provinces and states from Quebec all the way down to Georgia. The round and shiny leaves provide a beautiful groundcover, and you get the yellow flowers as an added bonus. This plant is easy to maintain and will do well in most soil types, and it can stand a light range of full sun to partial shade. The one drawback is that the fruit of this plant is inedible. Waldsteinia fragarioides spreads by rhizomes and it will readily naturalize in your cape cod garden. Are you thinking non-native pachysandra for groundcover? Don’t. This plant will do the job just fine.
